An academy is a different way of managing a school. Rather than being the responsibility of the Local Authority (Plymouth City Council), an academy is managed by a Trust, which is set in place by an approved sponsor. The sponsor (Plymouth University) has been assessed and approved by the Government as an organisation which has the skills and experience to ensure it is able to support the future development and management of the school.
There is provision for 420 children and a 26 F.T.E. place Nursery along with a Support Centre for 12 children with an Autistic Spectrum/Complex Communication Disorder from across the city.
The site is split into coloured blocks for each phase of the school, Foundation, Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2. Each block has a covered outside learning space. One block also has an attached cookery room and a kiln. Each block contains 4 classes, 2 in each year group, creating a small school feel within a large organisation. All staff within each year group share ideas and plan together. The Foundation Unit has its own secure and specifically designed play areas. In addition, there are shared extensive outside learning areas including allotment space, MUGA, quiet garden, a climbing ship and a large field incorporating a drained pitch to Sport England standard. We also have a hall for indoor PE and a separate dining area where hot meals are served. We follow a skills based curriculum.
